The International Retinal Research Foundation Board of Directors is proud to recognize Alston Callahan, MD (1911-2005), and Michael A. Callahan, MD for receiving the 2026 Award presented by Sight Savers of America. The Award was given in acknowledgement of their commitments to advancing scientific discovery and developing innovative treatments for retinal diseases.
As the primary catalyst behind the establishment of the Eye Foundation Hospital (as it was then known), Alston Callahan, MD left an indelible mark on ophthalmic care in the Southeast, earning the distinction of being a pioneer in ophthalmic plastic surgery. Following World War II, he relocated to Birmingham and helped establish for the first Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama Medical School, laying the groundwork for what is now the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital.
In January 1997, alongside his son Michael A. Callahan, MD, and other colleagues, the International Retinal Research Foundation (IRRF) was founded, marking a pivotal moment in eye care.
Dr. Mike Callahan, an experienced ocular and oculoplastic surgeon, has led the IRRF since 2004, guiding the Foundation through a strategic evolution. He has overseen the distribution of over $35 million in support of scientific investigations targeting all structures of the human eye. Under his leadership, the Foundation has shifted its focus to concentrate on accelerating scientific breakthroughs via partnerships with other leading vision funding organizations. This initiative aims to bolster research in AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and other vision-related conditions.
