{"id":4615,"date":"2021-12-15T16:17:18","date_gmt":"2021-12-15T22:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/irrf.org\/?p=4615"},"modified":"2024-02-06T17:54:19","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T23:54:19","slug":"2021-alston-callahan-md-postdoctoral-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irrf.org\/2021-alston-callahan-md-postdoctoral-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 Alston Callahan, MD Postdoctoral Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ryo Terao, MD, PhD<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ophthalmology.wustl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Ophthalmology &amp; Visual Sciences<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Louis, Missouri<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_4\"><strong>PROJECT TITLE<\/strong>: <em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dysregulated Lipid Metabolism and Senescence in Age-Related Macular Degeneration<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Terao received his MD from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hosp.tsukuba.ac.jp\/opima\/english\/medical\/04_01.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Tsukuba, Japan<\/a> and completed his internship at the University of Tsukuba Hospital.\u00a0 He trained as a resident in the University of Tokyo Hospital Japan.\u00a0 He then earned his PhD from the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Tokyo, Japan, under the supervision of Makoto Aihara, MD, PhD.\u00a0 Dr. Terao began training in basic science as a graduate student in the Department of Ophthalmology, focusing on bioactive lipid mediators in retinal diseases.\u00a0 This sparked his interest in how lipid metabolism affects retinal diseases.\u00a0 Throughout the PhD program, he has published several articles on bioactive lipids in retina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Terao has received the Japanese Ophthalmological Society (JOS) Young Investigator Award, as well as the Bayer Japan Retina Award in 2020.\u00a0 After graduating in 2020, he joined the lab of Rajendra S. Apte, MD, PhD at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis as a postdoctoral research fellow.\u00a0 Dr. Apte currently holds the Paul A.
