Project Title:  Application of New Molecular Technologies in the Genetic diagnosis of hereditary Retinal Dystrophies

After a Fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida, USA, Dr. Arias return to the University of Barcelona where he is now Associate Professor of Ophthalmology.  His main areas of interest are age-related macular degeneration (AMD), pathologic myopia, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, macular surgery and retinal detachment.  He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, as Ophthalmology, Retina and The British Journal of Ophthalmology.  Dr. Arias has also authored many chapters of books about maculopathies.  Recently, he has worked as editor of a handbook of retina and has edited an update of anti-VEGF therapy in choroidal-retinal disorders.  He has served as principal investigator in many clinical trials evaluating photodynamic therapy and antiangiogenic drugs for the management of macular diseases.  Dr. Arias serves on the Editorial Board of the journal, Archivos de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmologia” and as a Board Member of SERV (Spanish Society of Retina and Vitreous).
